Revised result gives Coates Donington race 1 victory as ‘winner’ Bushell demoted to third

Max Coates has been declared the winner of Donington’s opening Renault UK Clio Cup race earlier today after officials reinstated him to second place which then became first when winner on the road Mike Bushell was demoted to third by a time penalty.

Ciceley Motorsport’s Coates had originally crossed the line in second behind Bushell but he was excluded for having received outside assistance which enabled him to rejoin the grid after the race had been red flagged on its opening lap.

Coates though appealed the decision. Officials upheld that appeal and he was put back to second in the provisional result.

Team Pyro’s Bushell was then handed a 1.5 second penalty for a robust move which had taken him past WDE Motorsport’s Lee Pattison into the lead of the race.

That meant he fell to third behind Coates and Pattison in the final result. It’s a decision that has a significant effect at the head of the championship with Pattison now moving three points clear of Bushell. They had been tied for the lead going into the race…

Coates’s win puts him back to third in the standings. It also means three different drivers have won the first three races of 2017…
